Methow Valley News June 3, 1999 Endangered Species Coverage Workshop to explore "People and Salmon" An educational workshop, "Land Stewardship for People and Salmon," will come to the Methow Valley Saturday (June 5) at North Cascade Outfitters north of Twisp. John Williams, an Oregon State University cooperative extension agent and the keynote speaker, will discuss methods Wallowa County, Ore., has been using to promote habitat enhancement while minimizing the impacts on the local economy. Other speakers include representatives from the Forest Service, the North Central Washington Resource Conservation and Development Council, the Pacific Watershed Institute, Washington State University, the state Department of Natural Resources, the Okanogan Conservation District and the Methow Conservancy. The workshop begins at 8 a.m. and will last until about 4 p.m. It will be an opportunity for folks to interact with landowners and local resource professionals at outdoor activity stations and learn more about salmon biology and watershed conservation practices. Landowners will also be able to learn about different partnership possibilities and programs that have the potential to alleviate some of the hardships resulting from Endangered Species Act listings. The event is sponsored by People for Salmon and the North Central Washington Resource Conservation and Development Council. People for Salmon is a statewide program that brings volunteers together to restore salmon. Through this program, the public, businesses, tribes, landowners, community organizations, fisheries enhancement groups and others are joining forces to work on restoration projects. The event will be primarily outdoors. Attendees may bring a brown-bag lunch, or box lunches may be ordered at the morning sign-up.
