Endangered Species Coverage

Second symposium meetings scheduled

A second set of town hall meetings about fish and water issues began last week, a prelude to a November symposium about balanced resources.

A town meeting is scheduled for Wednesday (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. in the MV Senior Center in Twisp. The meeting will focus on fish and water issues, particularly federal and state regulatory agencies responsible for implementing or enforcing the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act.

The meeting is a prelude to the Okanogan County Balanced Resource Symposium, a day-long event slated for Nov. 20 at the Agri-plex in Okanogan.

"The goal of the symposium steering committee is to facilitate an open and civil community dialog about controversial natural resource topics facing Okanogan County," according to Carl Bjelland of Weyerhauser, one of the businesses involved in the symposium. "Given the events that have occurred in the Methow Valley this year, the committee decided to tackle the issues of fish and water in Okanogan County. "

The town hall meeting will be an introduction to the various federal and state agencies that have responsibilities for enforcing or implementing the Endangered Species and Clean Water acts. Craig Nelson of the Okanogan Conservation District will be the presenter at the session.

The symposium will produce a strategy that will be put down on paper and shared with political leaders, regulatory agencies and local community members.

For more information about the town hall meeting and the symposium, contact Bjelland at (509) 476-3820 or Herb Evans at (509) 826-3396.
