Methow Valley News 6/22/2000 Endangered Species Revised Wilson Ranch plan goes to hearing by Lee Hicks The Okanogan County Planning Commission will consider new plans for Wilson Ranch that reflect settlement of litigation over water for the development. The new plan for the project, which includes the existing Freestone Inn, involves expanding the original Wilson Ranch boundaries and the addition of 15 cabin sites on about 38 acres knows as Elsies Meadows. It also would include addition of the existing 15 Early Winters Cabins, which were part of Phase I of the proposed Arrowleaf planned destination resort. R. D. Merrill Co. announced in early December it would withdraw plans for Arrowleaf which would have included an 18-hole golf course and about 600 lodging and housing units. Earlier this year, Merrill settled a lawsuit challenging water rights for Wilson Ranch, and began negotiations with Trust for Public Lands to sell the 1,200 acre Arrowleaf site. The modified Wilson Ranch planned development would be expanded to 35 single cabin sites, including two existing rental residences near the 24-room Freestone Inn, in addition to the 15 Early Winters cabins. The plan also involves new sewage treatment and water facilities, a new swimming pool and other amenities. Freestone Lake would be used for storage to supply domestic water, while continuing to be used for flyfishing and small non-motorized boats. A hearing on the plan is set for 7 p. m. June 26 in the county commissioners hearing room. Public comments will be accepted in writing before the hearing, or in person at the session. The planning commission has also issued a "determination of non-significance" under the states environmental policy act. Appeals must be received by 5 p.m., June 28. Opinion | Sports |
