New York, New York it’s a wonderful place...

Let’s just say the Mariners had a great regular season and doff the cap to the champions...the Yankees, their fans and the city.

For a town that’s gone through so much, with the nation feeling its agony, the Yankees’ whipping of the Mariners may be just another symbol of the resilience of the nation’s signature metropolis.

For those of us without TV, listening on KVLR to the sound of the fans in the background was as moving as the Yankees fifth repeat as AL champions in six years. These fans were more than 50,000 Americans, whose vulnerability was monstrously demonstrated Sept. 11. Yet they proved they would continue to live their lives in the city they love.

As for the Diamondbacks, it could be a lonely World Series except for a few fans in Arizona.

Forest Service action confirms need for hearings

Just a few weeks after the Thirtymile Fire investigation report was issued, the Forest Service has changed one of the key conclusions.

The head of the agency’s review board of the probe into the July 10 death of four firefighters now says it appears some firefighters may not have heard orders to move down from a rock slope to a safer position to deploy their heat shelters.

Families of the firefighters who died had objected to the original conclusions that orders may have been ignored.

But the clarification of this important issue does little to answer a more basic question of what went wrong in command and control on the blaze, leaving the firefighters subject to entrapment in the first place.

Senate hearings called at the urging of Sen. Maria Cantwell were postponed last week because of anthrax scares in congressional buildings.

The hearings should proceed as soon as possible and re-examine all issues of the Thirtymile Fire.
